Outlook 2014 – Technology, Social Networks & Social Capital

Are new Technologies a blessing or curse… what really will matter in 2014 and beyond are the individual and cultural mindsets with which we are creating and using technologies.

So, what would be closer then looking at Human Capital. Human Capital is not only the key source of sustainable economic value but also the key source for social innovation and cultural development.

Technologies that are helping us to grow Human Capital into Social Capital are centered around communication in it’s broadest sense. Applications running on the internet infrastructure help us connecting, sharing, inspiring and understanding our peers and our environments and conquer new terrain to elevate living standards around the world.

Challenge as Chance
The challenge we are facing right now could be actually discovered as huge chance… as a chance to cultivate a liquid, more flexibly structured social network dynamic throughout society. Remember… Human Capital is the key source for sustainable economic value and social innovation… so if the current structure of Social Capital will be conquered by fresh expressions of Human Capital and unfolds… this will have direct implications on value creation globally through internet technology and its extensive periphery.

The polarity that opens the realm of Social Capital to conquer and expand into spans between the structural and organizational strength of companies, institutions and governments… which include discipline, training and standardization of processes that are providing scalability and reliability on one side. On the other side we find the abundant diversity of independent professionals, innovators and agile open communities.

The strength of the well established organizational side is also their weakest point… ever shortening innovation cycles and the need for new solutions demand a much higher degree of flexibility and a cultural understanding of innovation as an ongoing process. The weaknesses of the one are exactly mirroring the strength of the others… and vice versa.

Social innovators who need to make up for their lack of structure, standardization, scalability and resources are forced to be flexible and innovative all the time.

The great chance that arises here comes from the strong polarities. In fact we need the capabilities of both sides to define our next stage of social abundance and well-being. Human Capital has been the fuel for the development of our social structures all along.
The urge for change also roots in our longing for personal growth… which automatically comes with an elevation of awareness… which inevitably includes more mutual social and ecological responsibility… a state which we could call Resilience!

The space that has been opened through the internet, the social networks, communication and peer technologies helped us to reveal our current social and economic structures and behaviors. We now have the opportunity to observe a continuous chain of cultural changes… they are undeniable and accessible to a broader part of society then ever before… in 2013 we saw this movement peaking not least through the revelations of Snowden on the NSA, and the continuing waves crashing to the shore of public dismay.
In 2014 we probably see more of the initiatives that are aiming towards a transformation of our global culture into more collaborative states. Shared values and the development of trust relationships are key elements of Social Capital to drive this transformational process and to enable social innovation.

Technology will play an important role… from sensors to applications, from databases to 3D printing… we will see peer design becoming a vital part in our future… opening the door for new social business and value models.
